The Offy ran purrfect on the dyno (actually just a test stand) with the rebuild daddy's and us all smilin.. That was Tuesday night.
46 hours later the Offy was installed, running, everything working, and the trailer reloaded with almost everything that we brought, Jeeplet loaded, re-hitched to the bus and ready to hit the road. Did some bus and trailer maintenance and left Cincy at noon today.
Just as we got to Indianapolis we blew a left front tire, and it came off the rim and landed in the center of I-75. Ground to a stop, a hundred cars behind us stopped and Jerry ran out and dragged the ninety pound tire to the side. Six hours later, a new Alcoa rim and eight Michelin's we were back on the road...She sure rides nice.
On his third and last run for the day, the throttle linkage only went about 3/4 throttle and would not exceed 170mph. Working on it this morning, don’t need a lot more to exceed the 176 record. That is our main goal, to break the record that the President of SCTA (Bonneville governing body) has held for six years (and it took him 10 yrs to break the previous record). The president, Bill Lattin, and his dad Jim are still pulling for us cause they know how hard we worked and that in theory our car is heads and shoulders above anything that has ever been in that class. They say “records are meant to be broken”.
This morning we are re-engineering the linkage and will make another run around noon.
I have some video footage but have to figure out how to get it on Utube..
We are flying in another transmission from Winters today for delivery in Salt Lake City tomorrow early am. We will be at the airport terminal to pick it up and hopefully have it installed and ready to run by noon tomorrow.
TUESDAY MORNING AUGUST 13, 2013 UPDATE--Picked up the new transmission at Delta at 8pm Monday night, installed it this morning, and were on course #1 before noon.
Strapped Jerry in, off he went, shifted smoothly, ran mush stronger with the 115 pill (from 110), spun out at 181mph in the soft wet salt. So far today there have been 22 spin outs on course #1. We have a nice video and will upload it to Utube later.
Went back thru tech, got a gold star, now ready to go again. We are researching the three courses to see if we are going to make another attempt or wait till tomorrow am when the track is the best.
TUESDAY EVENING AUGUST 13, 2013 UPDATE--Jerry ran 175.996 against the 5 year 176.526 record. Wouldn’t go over 5300 RPM. Drug it back to the pits (10 1/2 miles), looked at lots of things, including the GoPro video, which told us a lot cause we could read the gages. We deduced that the oil pressure was reduced and then focused on the lower end. Ouch! Cut open the oil filter found it filled with bearing material.
Since we don’t want to hurt the Offy any more, we are folding our tents..Bonneville is very humbling..However, we all had a blast!! This place is an unbelievable rush.

WEDNESDAY MORNING AUGUST 14, 2013 UPDATE--Here’s the video of what we thought was a complete spin at 170mph, after viewing the film we know Jerry saved it from a spin in the soft wet salt. Before the end of the day yesterday there were 33 spinouts on course #1 at that point. They closed that course finally.
Our grand plan was for Jerry to break the existing record, then Bill to take it to 200 mph and get the red hat (must break a record and exceed 200), then for me to take it all the way (in theory 212 mph). That way we would each have a world land speed record, be in the 200mph club and hold the fastest record at the end of the day. Bummer we had engine issues. This guarantees we will be back again next year!!!
